12/12/19 State v. Lester Dennard, Guilty Verdict after Trial

On December 11, 2019, Lester Dennard, age 33  of Commerce Street, Bridgeton, was found guilty by a Cumberland County Jury of the following offenses:

  1. Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, 2nd degree;
  2. Possession of a Defaced Weapon, 4th degree;
  3. Possession of Weapons and Devices, 4th degree; and
  4. Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Person, 2nd

On May 23, 2019, Millville Police Officers assigned to the Neighborhood Crime Prevention Unit were on patrol when they entered Oakview Apartments.  They observed Dennard get in the back seat of a parked vehicle while pulling a handgun out of his waistband. The Millville Police Officers quickly approached Dennard and found a 9 mm Luger Caliber Sig Sauer Semi-Automatic Pistol on the floor of the backseat of the vehicle.  After retrieving the gun, the Officer observed that the serial numbers had been defaced by a scratching type method.

Mr. Dennard remains in the Cumberland County Jail until sentencing.  Mr. Dennard faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for the offenses.  Sentencing is scheduled for January 17, 2020 in front of the Honorable William Ziegler, J.S.C.  Assistant Prosecutor Kim Barfield represented the State and Michael Ortiz, Esquire, represented Mr. Dennard.
