Get to Know the CCPO – Internet Crimes Against Children

Within the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO) Investigative Division’s Special Investigations Bureau, nestled inside of the Special Victims Unit, lies the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, commonly referred to as ICAC. The ICAC unit is charged with the investigation and prosecution of child sex exploitation matters surrounding the possession, distribution and manufacturing of child pornography via the many forms of online communications used today.

Across the country, and the world for that matter, child sex exploitation is an ever growing problem that has a dramatic effect on its victims and their families. The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office takes this problem extremely serious and dedicates detectives and prosecutors, who are specially trained in this area, to combat same. Using high tech equipment and detection techniques, the CCPO – ICAC Unit ferrets out this type of illegal trade, that falls within the county limits, and aggressively investigates and prosecutes offenders. In addition to the above, the CCPO – ICAC Unit assists state, federal and local law enforcement with investigations and intelligence gathering.

The CCPO – ICAC Unit participates in the New Jersey State ICAC Task Force, which is comprised of  law enforcement partners across the state and managed by the New Jersey State Police. This program falls within the Federal ICAC Task Force Program which was created to help state and local law enforcement agencies enhance their investigative response to offenders who use the internet, online communication systems, or other computer technology to sexually exploit children. The program is currently composed of 46 regional Task Force agencies and is funded by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
